Microsoft Internet Explorer exploit

06/25/04 | by [mail] | Categories: computer/tech

The department of homeland security has issued a warning about a new way that Microsoft products have been exploited. I saw this first on Leo Laporte's blog. This one looks pretty serious, so update your anti-virus software. It looks like Firefox users won't have to worry about it since it is an IE security hole. If you still use IE, this would be a great time to switch.

gringo: Here’s what I would do, use a different IM client. Trillian and GAIM are both pretty good (and they work with Yahoo, AOL, MSN, etc., all in one program.) I think they’re better about respecting your default browser. I don’t have Messenger installed, so I can’t look throught the menus for you, but chances are it’s going to use IE no matter what. That’s MS for you.

i think you’re right on not having the option to change the browser… i used trillian way back when but didn’t have much luck operating it, i especially didn’t like the interface - it was just a pain. i’ll give it a whirl though. which do you prefer of the 2?

I prefer GAIM. Trillian has gotten better, but GAIM has a nice, clean look, and it’s open source, which is cool. Note that Yahoo recently blocked these clients, so you may not be able to use Yahoo’s IM with them until a fix is released.

Trillian is patched for the yahoo changes. Not sure about GAIM.

Yes, GAIM released version 0.79, which works with Yahoo. So Yahoo’s blocking idea worked for about 2 days.
