How old is the Earth?

08/27/07 | by [mail] | Categories: computer/tech

I don't know how many of my readers think the Earth has only been around for 6,000 years. I would assume it's a small percentage, but I might be surprised. I've got a poll running now about that, so feel free to cast your vote. I'd also like to hear from you in the comments. If you think the Earth is young, please explain why. I've looked at young Earth creationist ideas like those on the Answers in Genesis website and the Creation Museum. They seem to go to great lengths to avoid generally accepted science.

I know there are some very intelligent believers that read this page. Maybe some of you can explain the relationship between your faith and your views of science.

As a geologist, I’d cast my vote for 4.5 Billion years. Too bad I can’t vote in your poll however. :(

It chucks out an error. ;)

I’m voting for 4.5 billion, but this is so far out of my field I’m accepting it on faith either way. The young earth (about 6000) doesn’t seem supported by just about anyone who isn’t trying to prove something else, but I couldn’t even begin to carefully explain why nearly everyone else seems to like a number generally around 4.5 billion exactly (aside from making some weak gestures towards the time it takes for isotopes to decay/how decayed some seem to be).

It’s nice to see that all of your readers so far are of a sound mind.

I’ve nearly finished reading The Language of God, and so far I find myself agreeing with Dr. Collins 100%. I may write a counter-review in response to yours.

Don’t know how old the earth is, I’ll leave that to science. The Bible reference to 6000 (I thought 7,500) is not contradictory. It is the age of the Adamic Peoples.

Adam was not put on a blank earth. He was put on earth to spread the word and kingdom to the non Adamics.

Hope this helps.
