I have read these articles(all 3) a long time after they were posted by the author but it was a pleasure reading them, especially to see some of my own thoughts reflected in them. The comment by Eric de Jong was also great to read.

I’ve always thought LOTR is beyond just fantasy fiction, its a summary of life. It shows both the good and bad sides of life, in a positive way, heartening the reader to believe that life is a journey worth experiencing.

Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were both professors at Oxford when they decided that they wanted to use their love of mythical tales to bring the truth of the gospel to those who might not be engaged by the scriptures in any other manner. Both LOTR and the Narnia series are their efforts to do that, and they both succeeded wonderfully, although I am fonder of the LOTR rings series than I am the Narnia one.

I am simply amazed that we can live in the world we live in and someone can say that they not believe in the God of the Bible. Nothing is promised to us. We are not promised riches or long life or protection from the evil that exists around us. God has promised, however, that he will be with us through hell and high water. God doesn’t ask that you give your sons in battle to him. The only thing God wants is your heart. He has created the entire universe, He has all power, and yet He deeply desires an intimate relationship that only you can give. For those of you who don’t believe in God or are non-practicing Christians, think seriously of the precarious state you are in and come to God “who will in no wise cast you out.”

Your assesment of mercy as described in LOTR was spot-on. I found Frodo’s compassion for Gollum touching, especially in light of the incredible burden he carried.

Here here thanks Eric.
I am an non practicing christian and believe the stories in the bible are a tool to help explain why we shold live by certain morrals.
As per the scriptures of most religions ther are good stories that teach us the best ways to live our lives.
Movies are a very good way to convey a message and “The Lord of the rings” dose this well.

I never before considered the parallels between the Biblical epic and Mr. Tolkien’s, though the battle between Good and Evil and the forces that align with each seem apparent. It is the challenges and extreme threats to the lives of the little circle of Hobbit friends and the temptations presented to Frodo that initiate the amazing parallels.

Great articles here. i have read the book ‘walking with Frodo’ and you bring up similar points in this article. If you would like to learn more about Tolkien’s work spiritually and narratively go to MEB (middle earth blog).

Hi, I’m not a Christian, actually, I’m a Chinese girl. I love watching the movie The Lord of the Ring. I think what touches me the most is the spirit of the characters. The sentence “there’s always hope” appeared many times in the movie. They never give up, no matter how hard it is, or how dangerous it’s going to be, they kept going. Little role saves the whole world, that’s the highlight of the movie.
The compare you made was actually a shock to me, I didn’t even think about the movie this way. But you did great, Thank you for sharing you thoughts.
