If faith is a gift, then I guess I don’t have it. If your god wants to torture me forever because I don’t possess a gift that he didn’t give me then he’s a monster. I take comfort from the fact that such monsters only exist in our imaginations.

A few years late, but I have to float this out there anyway.

Heb 12:2 says “…Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith". And Rom 12:3 says ” … God has allotted to each a measure of faith.” These two verses clearly tell us that faith is not something that we do or a presence of mind that we develop, but that faith is a gift from God.

Rom 10:17 says ” … faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.” So faith is a gift from God that we receive from the word of Christ, which in this dispensation we get from the Bible rather than from a burning bush. So in His time He will allot faith to us as needed from the word of the Bible. In 2 Cor 10:15 we see that faith can grow, so as we study the Bible God can add to our faith.

I received an 1800cc motorcycle from my wife for my birthday years ago. A gift. I knew what my gift was for and how to use it. I knew who it was from, how it worked, and what it meant. But when I got out on the street and opened up that throttle, I felt an unnatural fear that took quite a while to become accustomed to. When driven the way the bike was built to be driven, it could flat out turn your stomach inside out. Every time! A voice in the back of my head kept telling me “you’re crazy". Still, because I knew that bike inside and out, I had confidence in my abilities to keep the shiny side up. (pseudo-faith)

I liken this to Abraham’s faith. He knew what it was. He knew where it came from. He knew how it worked. It probably even scared the heck out of him. We don’t know exactly when Abraham received the gift, but I would have to presume that it had grown to the point where God was comfortable putting Abraham to the ultimate test. I’d have to bet that Abraham was more afraid of the test he was facing than the fear I experience when heading a little too fast into a tight turn with an 800lb. beast. Yes, it is the depth of my world experiences that contribute to my confidence when I ride and not faith, but for me, the analogy holds up fine.

Also, if it is truly the gift of faith that leads a person to follow what you call a “disembodied voice” (God does refer many times to Himself as having a body), then you interfere with that person at your own risk. Faith is between two, God and creature. I don’t agree with the JW, but I respect them for their courage.

Frankly, I don’t find this world important enough to go around worrying about how to save lives. Your lot in life is in God’s hands alone. All I care about is the future of souls. Souls are eternal; earthly bodies aren’t, and I don’t want to be in this awful realm any longer than I have to.

“This world is not my home I’m just a-passin’ through
My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
The angels beckon me from heaven’s open door
And I can’t feel at home in this world anymore”

Isn’t it strange, that God who is Purely Good, would order Abraham to Kill his innocent son, Isaac?
Would our loving Father, God, play a “Trick” like this on His loyal servant?
Could it be that God NEVER told Abraham to Sacrifice Isaac?

All of these questions are answered in this Teaching:
http://bibleofgod.org/did-god-tell-abraham-to-kill-isaac/

• The Common Understanding of this record
• Why is this “Test” Questionable?
• Did God Tempt Abraham?
• Burnt Offering vs. Sacrifice
• Satan’s Deception
• Not the first time Abraham Miscomprehended
• How old was Isaac?
• Other Important things to Note

“4.It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5. who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6. and who have fallen[c] away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

And - we, as Christians, are even more outrageous than the story of Abraham. Abraham didn’t end up killing his son. But, we believe in a God who actually does kill his own Son - and that on behalf of people who hated his Son. Don’t stop at Abraham - go all the way to scandal of the the cross itself.

Great read. Wish you posted more often.

I don’t know if you’ve read any Kierkegaard. I did when I was still a Christian and I still find him very useful in debates with Christians. Kierkegaard’s theology pointedly explores how inherently irrational (and deeply radical) the Christian position is. He wrote a book (Fear and Trembling) about that very question (Would you kill your son if God asked you to do it?) and he posits Abraham’s answer - “Abe said, where You want this killin’ done?” - (persuasively, I think) as the model of what it means have authentic faith. Most of what passed for “faith” in his time, he viewed as mere social convention, almost the antithesis for him of faith.
