Ant, I understand that Wikipedia is not a scholarly source. That’s why I referred Doug to the citations here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Daniel#cite_note-See_J.J_1993_pp122-123-27

The sources in citations 28-34 could be considered scholarly, wouldn’t you agree? Do you have any evidence for an earlier dating of the Book of Daniel?

If Yahweh is able to defer fulfillment of his promises until after I die, then I’d like to follow his example. My house payment is due, but I’ll just pay it after I die. I’ll be a good parent after I die. Let’s not put murderers in prison when we can just punish them after they die. This whole “after you die” business is one of the many ways that theists lower their expectations of their god. In the old days you could threaten that your god would strike people with disease or lightning or untimely death. But as we’ve learned more about how the world works, those threats seem empty. So now god acts at a time that is unverifiable and unfalsifiable: after we die. Until you can present any credible evidence that you know anything about what happens to a person after they die, I’ll continue dismissing your assertions.

I see a very close connection between our brains and our consciousness. Injuries to the brain can affect the consciousness. The most reasonable conclusion seems to me to be that when the brain dies, the consciousness ceases to exist.

If your god exists and wants me to respond to threats and promises involving my fate after death, then he should provide some evidence for the idea that I will continue to exist after my death. Until I see such evidence, I’ll have to conclude that the afterlife is nothing but fantasy and wishful thinking.

You asked, “If you do not believe in the bible then why waste your life trying to destroy it.” Because belief in the literal truth of the Bible causes harm.

Wiki is not very reliable. Dan, I see you as a very smart man. To say this verse is not true is to say you have already lived your life and know exactly what happens in your afterlife (whatever that is to that person). It does not say when you will receive. As far as I can tell we are both still alive and neither of us know what happens after we die as fact cause we have not experienced that death yet. If you do not believe in the bible then why waste your life trying to destroy it.
Enjoy your journey my friend
God bless

Doug,
I grabbed that number from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Daniel#Dating_and_content There are some citations and an overview of the reasons there. Is there any evidence for an earlier date?

Just responding to Danny at the moment (so little time these days)–
I think the dating of Daniel is hardly a settled issue. Would be interested to hear what research you base that claim on (honestly asking the question…I just haven’t looked into this recently).
