the bible has a slightly different take…
it states that faith is actually the evidence itself.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

You’re giving two very different definitions for the word “faith.” When I post comments, I proportion my certainty that it will work to the evidence that I’ve seen. In my experience it works about 9 times out of 10. In fact, I often copy my comment to the clipboard before hitting “Send comment” so that if something goes wrong I don’t have to re-type it. That’s based on the evidence I’ve seen over time, not faith.

My “faith” in chairs and website software are based on observations over time that can be repeated, tested and demonstrated to others who don’t initially share my “faith.” I’m only as certain of them as the evidence suggests I should be (not 100%).

But faith in a god or other supernatural claims are of a different sort. They’re based on things not seen and they can’t be repeated, tested or demonstrated to others.

I suggest that our certainty in anything should be in proportion to the evidence for it. So, my certainty in chairs might be 99% (they do break once in a while) and my certainty in this software might be 90% (it breaks more often). My certainty in any gods is hovering around 0% because I’ve never seen any evidence for them.

But faith is totally different. It says, “Let’s ignore the lack of evidence and just have 100% certainty.”

Do you see the difference?

If faith is the evidence of things not seen, then how does that apply to ladders and chairs? I can see them. I can put just a little weight on them at first to test them and make sure they’re strong enough to hold me. But I can’t see or test a god.

What is faith: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Heb 11:1)

We all have a measure of faith in everything we do; when you sit in a chair, you sit in it expecting for it to hold you.

When you climb a ladder you expect for that ladder to hold you. If you though that the ladder could not hold you, you would not climb it. (Thats faith)

Believe in what you don’t see, all Christians believe in God, but we have never seen Him. (correction)

I’ve got no problem with faithfulness. When I point out that there’s no evidence for one religious claim or another, people often tell me I just have to have faith. That’s the faith I’m responding to here. The kind that asks me to have certainty without evidence.

The Greek for Hebrews 1:1 may not be helpful to any of us. The words for “faith” and “things hoped for” are based on the same root word! It wouldn’t be too far off to translate it “Faith is the assurance of things that we have faith in.”
