Matt…I agree with this to an extent. I think that we should not rely on an earthly kingdom to “God-work.” But that does not mean that we cannot use an earthly kingdom to help.

But it goes a little further than that. There are certain things that I cannot do (nor can the larger church body do) without the “earthly kingdom.” Things like ending capital punishment, preventing war, etc.

I believe strongly that the Bible speaks into these things, and in turn I need to act (vote, become “political,” etc) accordingly.

That’s what I get for waiting to post my crackpot comments, someone gets in line ahead of me.

I would just say that I think mixing faith and politics is a mistake. That’s not the libertarian in me talking. It’s the Christian. Political power comes out of the end of a gun. The power of the kingdom of God is not power-over power, it’s power-under, servant power. I’ve been listening to some cool sermons on this (by the guy that was in the NYTimes article a while back).

I’m not saying one’s faith doesn’t determine who you vote for, of course it should. I’m just saying that the kingdom of God shouldn’t rely on any kingdom of the world to do it’s work. In glancing back at your post, you’re probably not even saying that.
